Director Aurore Magnier turns the chimeric character of the mermaid, half-woman half-fish, into a queer icon and a glorious figure of resistance against assigned genders.
An ordinary mermaid not feeling comfortable in her snickers goes to see the shrink. No scales but a load of questions, she comes to sort out her heavy shell suitcase. In this auto-fictitious tale, Aurore Magnier stages a quest for identity where questions about insanity, death and femininity converge. Starting from a personal experience told through a Disney slideshow, Je Suis Une Sirène is a cry for rallying to those who don’t fit the mould.
