開動 Kaidong, the French-Taiwanese cooperation for the performing arts from 2018 to 2022

The 兩廳 National Theater & Concert Hall, Taipei, Taiwan managed by Huey-Mei Lee, le phénix scène nationale ECH Valenciennes managed by Romaric Daurier have drawn up and implemented a new cooperation project whose purpose is to support the artistic creation between their two countries. On the first November 2017, they both signed a four-year convention. This is the first time such an agreement has been signed between two national theaters from these countries.

The two theaters share a firm belief : they must support the boldest artistic projects by meeting their ambitions and supporting them throughout their risky adventure. To do so, the theater must find new professional tools to help them : The TIFA is one of the most important Asian festivals steered by the NTCH (residencies, mentorship, executive production, international cooperation). As far as the phénix is concerned, the ECH and its two major events – the NEXT Arts festival and the Cabaret de Curiosités (associate artists, campus, training, mentorship, international cooperation).

By joining their means and approach, they’ve decided to take a new step together. It is about building an experimental joined ecosystem between Europe and Asia to enhance artistic emergence and turn each theatre into a springboard for high-level artists. Cultural differences will be born in mind : a well-known European artist may be considered as an emerging artist in Asia, this is what this project is all about.

This partnership meets the needs of both theaters : guiding French and Taiwanese artists in a globalized environment, helping them overcome the language barrier, the aesthetic and cultural gaps by opening up the scope of possibilities at a decisive time in their careers. The first step towards an international career is very meaningful to this generation. It is both a risk to take and an opportunity not to be wasted.

This is a long-term project : from 2018 to 2022. This is what makes the project unique. Time is necessary to truly consolidate support to the artists. Eight artistic projects will be carried out over four years on both continents. The artists to be supported will be chosen, then a career plan will be outlined.

All means necessary will be made available : workshops, mentorship, artistic residency, executive production, enhancing professional structuring, subtitling, touring (France, Europe, Asia), meeting the audience, participatory initiative, dissemination.

To plan this support on a wider scale, this partnership will also be the opportunity to meet with professionals : French, European, Taiwanese and Asian artistic directors.

This year, the supported artists will be Taiwanese artists Su Wen Chi, Yu Ju Lin and Baboo Liao, French artists Julien Gosselin, Damien Chardonnet-Darmaillacq, Antoine Defoort and Halory Goerger.

The highlight of the Cabaret de Curiosité will be dedicated to Taiwan from the 15th March to the 17th March 2018 : three shows and professional meetings.

The NTCH will largely co-produce Julien Gosselin’s next show.

Kaidong, the French-Taiwanese cooperation for the performing arts from 2018 to 2022 is supported by the Centre Culturel de Taiwan in Paris, The French Office in Taipei and the Institut Français.
